Is Your Snacking Sabotaging You?

I would tell anyone that they should be having at least one snack a day, preferably two.

I always have people asking me, what should I be snacking on?  One thing that I have noticed as
we have been walking around Paris is that, one gas stations are far and few between (at least right in Paris),
and you don’t get the snack treats you normally get in a gas station, and they don’t have convenience stores.

The girls asked if they could get some candy one day and I said I hadn’t even seen a snack shop.  When walking
along the streets you see these little cafes and shops where they sell sandwiches and drinks.  They don’t sell candy,
they sell bananas and instead of pop, water.

It was great to see.  Everyday when we were needing a snack, we just stopped at a vendor and grabbed bananas and water.

The typical sugary snacks we are used to will not only get stored as fat if not used, but will give to a peak of energy then a crash sensation.
It certainly won’t give you any type of satiety. It has no nutritional value and is simply empty calories.

When choosing your snacks you want something that will tie you over until lunch or dinner.  Some great examples and some of my favourites are:

1.  Almonds (10-15) plain, and either a handful of dried cranberries or a piece of fruit.

2.  Half a cup lite cottage cheese and drained canned peaches or your favourite fruit.

3.  Carrot sticks and hummus

4. Yogurt and a piece of fruit ( I prefer more fibrous kinds when possible like apples, oranges)

5. Cheese string and piece of fruit

6. Take a whole wheat english muffin, split it and toast.  Put on each half about 1 tbsp of lite ricotta cheese.
Top with a little apple sauce and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Switching over to more healthy alternatives can seem challenging at first, but it’s not only healthier, you will feel better and have more energy.

Committed to your fitness success,

Kelly Parker
